Grade 3 / Topic: Rocks And Minerals

This program consists of one fulldome movie “IMPACT” and one short movie “ASTEROID IMPACT MISSION”. The movie will be followed by a science talk (about rocks and minerals from earth and outer space, their properties and uses in our daily life) and question/answer period can be between the movies or after the short movie. Kids will enjoy holding and investigating samples of different rocks and minerals and a meteorite sample.

IMPACT! (FULL DOME MOVIE)

IMPACT! is a show that teaches about meteors, meteorites, asteroids, and comets. It shows dramatically the effects of the Chicxulub and Tungusta events, plus the Pallasite impact that resulted in the Brenham meteorite fall and describes ways that asteroid hunters seek new objects in the solar system, and how ground penetrating radar is used to find meteorites that have survived to the Earth’s surface. Narrated by astronaut Tom Jones, it also discusses ways that humans might try to deflect an asteroid or comet that is on a collision course with Earth.

RUNNING TIME: 25:00min
SUBJECTS COVERED: Meteorite, Magnetism, Effects of Pushes and Pulls on the Motion of Two Objects, Changes in Energy when Objects Collide.

ASTEROID IMPACT MISSION (SHORT MOVIE)

ASTEROID IMPACT MISSION demonstrates the effects of the Chicxulub and Tunguska events, plus the Pallasite impact that resulted in the Brenham meteorite fall. Also included is live footage of the asteroid fragment that struck Siberia on February 15, 2013, becoming the most documented meteor event in history. We learn about the ways that asteroid hunters seek new objects in the solar system, and how ground penetrating radar is used to find meteorites that have survived to the Earth’s surface. Also discussed are ways that humans might try to deflect an asteroid or comet that is on a collision course with Earth.

RUNNING TIME: 07:00 min
